How seriouse is seondary polycythemia?
My dad recently went to the doctor because he was and still is in sever pain. The doctors are still running some tests on him before they officially diagnose him with anything, but from my own research, I would guess he has some from of polycythemia secondary I believe . This is what the doctors are thinking right now as well. The problem is he has a brain tumor that cannot be removed as it is in the center of his brain, and it is not cancerous but I've read the only treatment for secondary polycythemia is treating the primary problem...that can't happen. My dad received a ton of radiation when he was younger for his first brain tumor which has since been removed and the only reason it is not cancerous, the doctors believe, is because he smokes about a lot of marijuana. This also helps him deal with the pain.He is in serious pain, so I'm afraid that he might have acute leukemia. He recently quit smoking ciggerettes, drinking caffeine and going to hot tubs which he used to do daily. He is also taking asprin. Can someone please tell me the prognosis, and please explain to me how serious it is and what the chances are of it turning into something more seriouse. He has also been on testosterone for 15 years. The doctor gave it to him for medical reasonsAny help would be great

High RBC Polycythemia?
I have a high RBC..the doc said it was elevated but wasnt devastatingly high...Im a smoker...19 yrs old...got tested for polcythemia vera which was negative...am I at serious risk for health issues? I am in the process of quitting...I smoke about a pack a day and have four 4 years...I also suffer from anxiety and panic attacks so I start thinking about it and I worry that Im just going to keel over and have a stroke or something...calm me?Also there isnt a history of heart issues in my family..only my grandma on one side who had two triple bypass'...she smoked for 40 years and my grandpa 55 years...my dad smoked for 10 years eventually at 2 packs a day and quit when he in his late twenties...just thought id give some background...No further tests...he suggested I quit smoking but thats about all...it has to be secondary polycythemia and since there are no other factors besides my smoking that could cause it that is what he and I believe it is...maybe stress related due to the panic attacks constant anxiety? Thanks for your reply I will contact him in the morning and see if phlebotomy would be something he would suggest...I think they take a pint out right? I'm just driving myself mad the anxiety does this ...I really appreciate your responses sincerely I thank you.
