If you have bipolar manic depressive illness do you see a therapist or a psychologist?
I'm doing a project for biology about the brain and were supposed to diagnose what a made up person Tony has. I believe he has bipolar manic depressive illness. For part of our assignment we have to explain what treatment is. I know there are medicines that people can take but what about a therapist psychologist? Would a psychologist be better than a therapist? Thanks
Do Lamotrigine (medicine for manic-depressive illness) cause incontinence?
I'm taking Lamotrigine for manic depressive illness bipolar II disorder . I am very reluctant to stop taking it, as it has been helpful in offsetting dreadful depressions. However, one thing that has happened to me since taking it is that I have had trouble controlling my bladder and, even worse, my bowels.I lose control of my bladder once every 2 3 days, although mostly can 'stop' myself half way through. Even worse, every 5 7 I lose control of my bowels, and there is nothing I can do to stop this. Its so bad I've started buying incontinence padsI am afraid of telling my doctor in case he tells me to come off the medication, as then I will have to start from scratch on a different one, risking the chance of a relapse. And it might be nothing to do with the medication. But then I'm 25 so its difficult to think of another reason why this is happening.Has anyone on this medication had these problems? If they haven't then I might as well not tell my doctor. Thanks very much
How sedative is the effect of the medication for bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness)?
Recently I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a.k.a. manic depressive illness . The medications I am taking are called Lamotrigine and Sertraline.I am taking 50mg of sertraline a day. The dose I am taking of Lamotrigine is gradually increasing. The doctor tells me that you can expect it to start having an effect at 200mg a day. However, one of the side effects it can have which I have read about is 'cognitive dampening', which is basically a grandiose way of saying it has a sedative effect. However, for my occupation in life I am a PhD student, so I want to be as sharp as I possibly can be, and am worried that these drugs might take the edge off me and even make me slightly 'zombie fied'.So does anyone with any experience of lamotrigine, or sertraline, know to what extent they sedate you and to what extent it would interfere with your academic work? Thanks in advance for any answers provided.p.s. one of the answerers suggested asking a doctor, not Yahoo answerers. It was a nicely worded answer so I'm sure the guy was just trying to be helpful, for which I'm grateful. But I am more interested in the opinions of people who have the illness and thus have first hand experience of the side effects of the medicine, rather than asking my doctor, who doesn't, and is only going on second hand knowledge.
