My friend has aplastic anemia and a disorder called PHN, how long does he have to live?
My friend was diagnosed with aplastic anemia 6 months ago. He started to get dizzy for no reason and was always tired, then decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told him that he was lucky he came in when he did, considering that all his blood counts were super low and that he probably would have died in less then a week if he didn't see the doctor. His brother was the best chance for a bone narrow transplant 1 4 chance of being a match, but came up negative. He also thought about asking friends, but then found out its a 1 in 20,000 chance that someone is a match, so didn't bother with that. He then went to the Donor pull to see if someone is a match, but couldn't find any matches their ether. Every month he has to have several blood transfusions to keep him alive. His currently undergoing immunosuppression therapy which was going OK for a while, but now his bone Narrow stopped producing white blood cells and red blood cells. He also has a new Illness on top of the Aplastic Anemia called Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria PNH . He can only get so many blood transfusions until they become ineffective. Is their a chance he can beat this, he has completely gave up hope.

He needs a bone narrow transplant, but his brother is not a match and can't find a Doner. I offered to get tested, but he said its like a 1 in 20,000 chance, so he doesn't want to bother with that. He is supposed to start Immunosuppressive therapy next week, so basically he is having is bone narrow removed, so his immune system doesn't attack his bone narrow. After he has his bone narrow removed, he won't have any immune system, so he will be open up to everything and everything, so even getting bit by the wrong mosquito that is carrying the west Nile virus can kill him. After his has this treatment, how long does he have to live?

His brother is getting tested to see if he's a match to be a doner, From what I heard its a 1 4 chance he will be a match. If that doesn't work out, then his going to the doner pool to see if their is any available doner. I offered to get tested, but he said its like a 1 in 20,000 chance Ill be a match, so he's not asking friends to be doner.If he can't find a doner, he's other option is to have his bone narrow removed, so he will not have any immune system. If he does this will it be a slow in pain full death. I guess this gives him 10 20 years to live.Would it be like having AIDS, I mean if you have no immune system, that means once you get sick, you stay sick because your body can't fight it off?

We have a friend that has been diagnosed with aplastic anemia and none of the doctors can figure out how he got it. They will not do any research at the moment, they said that if there was 150 people with they would start it right away, but not for one. Other people have had it, more will get it, why not prevent it? Does anybody know anything about it? Causes? He can't think of a way that he could've gotten it.
